Halloween Stories
I prowled Ridgewood on Halloween evenings with friends until eighth grade, when I was 13. After that year it wasn’t cool, even if the rewards were plentiful & it was easier than ever for me to collect a haul quickly.
A lot changed when they told us at the beginning of 9th grade that we were members of the Class of 1977. Ceasing to participate in the abundance of Tricks & Treats apparently was a trade-off for us being formed & organized into a life-long class of RHS alumni.
Much has also changed in the costumes we wore. If a homemade “Hobo” costume wasn’t the most popular costume among the boys, then I don’t know was. We would smear our faces with charcoal, put on an old fedora, and hit the streets running. No need to waste time explaining to the neighbors what our costumes were. They knew in one look: Halloween was about the candy. Most nieghbors didn’t need to ask because they knew it would slow us from our appointed rounds.

Tales From The Wood…
I just came across this old photo of myself with two neighbors I don't recognize. I'm guessing its 1974, but that's definitely the triangle at the intersections of West End, Cantrell and Melrose..
And that's not a telephone pole. There was an extremely loud air raid siren mounted atop it that would seem to sound randomly annoying all.. now equally missed by those who remember it.

Harley
Harley, my dog
Is getting old.
Him and me both.
Old Harry Hoyt is long past
Being old, in fact,
Mr. Hoyt, he dead,
As it were (Joseph Conrad, thank you)
But he,
No bald end of the roader,
Last time I saw him
He wore a nappy suit
Shook his dentures in my ear
Knowing a teenager
Would raise his eyebrows,
Exiting the Church with
A kindly smile...
My dog Harley
Is getting old,
And more and more
Frequently
He does an odd
Rattle with his jowls…
And today in the glorious
Twilight
It hit me:
Harley
Is channeling Harry Hoyt,
Harley is telling me
To look to the ripples
In the salmon sky,
Harley is telling me
We don’t got much time
Left, and it’s time
To shake
Whatever rattle we have left.

The major decision: Courage or Comfort.
Thank you to the leaders of the school who Model the way.
