Comeback For Cursive?
3rd grade was long the place where cursive hand writing was introduced to children in the Ridgewood Public Schools (RPS). It’s reported comeback by various media, as a part of Common Core Curriculum Standards in New Hampshire, is a good step for everyone. Cursive handwriting is a legitimate style and a surreptitious introduction to Calligraphy & decorative handwriting.
Good handwriting is a 21st Century skill as much as it ever was in the previous two or three centuries. I would include it with another overlooked communications skill:
A M E R I C A N S I G N L A N G U A G E
ASL is the acronym. If you are wondering, there is an app for it!

Being able to demonstrate cursive handwriting and to communicate using ASL now join my three previously suggested RHS graduation requirements:
Being able to cook an omelet.
Being able to fix a garden salad & salad dressing.
Being able to bake a quick bread like a muffin or biscuit.
I do believe Seniors being asked to show what they have learned would make for a grand excuse to hold an All-RHS party at Veterans Field, under a big welcoming tent. If that is too lofty an idea, then hold the event inside showing off the newly redesigned kitchens and spacious meeting areas. Maybe include some alumni as judges for the tasting competitions and to rate the examples of cursive handwriting & ASL communication skills.
This “Adulting” event might be held on Homecoming Weekend. Food for thought.

Stand Strong And Leaf Them Worries Behind
On a cold Thanksgiving morning I stand on a bench to warm up as the sun rises over the buildings to the east and as I turn I see a shadowy version of myself in the leaves and take this as birds fly past overhead - give thanks and stand stong my friends.

RHS Class Of 1979 Reunion Update
To update on our 50th Reunion plans for class of '74, we have reserved the Ridgewood Woman's Club for the evening of Saturday, September 21, 2024. We set up a bank account at Valley National Bank in Ridgewood; they can work with Stripe payments. We will probably get the Market Basket to cater. We plan to use RSVPify for invitations and maybe reactivate our old website. We will start meeting and inviting in earnest in early January. —Pamela Perron lodging discounts and other weekend anomalies. Stay tuned, but PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!
