Joys Of Multi-Disciplinary Classes
Fifty-one years ago Ridgewood Schools offered cooking classes only for girls. All the industrial arts classes were segregated this way by gender. This changed for me in 1974 with my first cooking class for boys.
What began with an appreciation for what could be cooked and eaten during one class period, later became a career as a Restaurateur.
The initial boys’ cooking classes were part of a multi-disciplinary industrial arts curriculum at GWMS. There was co-teaching as well as an overall theme we worked towards as a group through this half year program.
Fast-forward 50 years, and co-ed industrial arts classes are no longer a topic of conversation. AI is the most talked about topic among educators, especially the RPS system-wide challenge of how-to blend AI technologies into today’s writing classrooms. The fear being that students will use AI to complete their assignments.
Maybe some solutions can be found in a multi-disciplinary approach. The anecdotal evidence suggests that AI tools which produce essays or even tests for teachers might oneday become authorized pedagogical tools. Two examples:
One teacher challenged their class to edit an AI composed essay and debate the corrections in class. In another constructive use of AI, a trigonometry teacher had produced an exam with 10 questions, one of which was created wrong by the AI tool. The class had to solve all the problems and show which one was wrong.
This is not to say all AI tools ought to be taught and that students ought to decide how much of the school day to use them. I am suggesting outright bans are a very blunt instrument and that more progress will be made if open discussions are held among students, faculty, and even the administrators who make policy but don’t work in the same building.
Lets evaluate the tools we have and the ones being considered. Perhaps create a user group online. How about a GroupSpot app for AI discussions? At minimum a school-wide presentation on the topic of AI and a follow-up discussion led by AI experts.

Tales From The Wood…
RIDGEWOOD, NJ – The Year of the Dragon was in full effect on Sunday afternoon, as Ridgewood High School hosted the 2024 Ridgewood Lunar New Year Festival.
The festivities, presented by the Ridgewood Asian American and Pacific Islander Alliance (Ridgewood AAPI Alliance), got underway with a Chinese ribbon dragon to commemorate the Year of the Dragon, which officially begins Saturday, February 10. The wide-ranging event featured acts from across a variety of Asian cultures, such as a Korean fan dance, a traditional Chinese umbrella dance, a performance by the Ridgewood High School K-pop dance team and a dance by RIC Beat Breakerz. After the performances were completed, there was a buffet of delicious food ranging from sushi to dumplings to Korean fried chicken for everyone to enjoy.

Took nephew Jacob to a few spots on one of our local trout streams today. The warmer weather has kept some of the better spots open. Here Jake is setting into a nice winter brown trout. I couldn't get down there to take a picture of it in the net, but maybe Jake was able to get one.

You’re Saying It Wrong
Ross & Kathy’s podcast: You're Saying It Wrong is a podcast that looks at what we get wrong—and what we sometimes get right—when it comes to this English language.
So ... you're sitting in your foyer, thinking about paying homage to someone, or maybe you're planning on delivering a coup de grace -- your forte, you know. On the newest You're Saying It Wrong, we look at words that have been imported into English from other languages -- and how we sometimes go a little nutso trying to make them sound as "correct" as possible ... while failing in the process.

Bamberger’s
An advertisement from February 5, 1897. Bamberger's eventually became a part of Macy's (1929), but remained its own storefront until the 1980's. Then in 1986, these stores (including this one from Newark) were fully converted to Macy's brand.
