Swastika Defaces RHS Bathroom
A bathroom at RHS was defaced with a Nazi Swastika on January 17 2024. We have re-printed the Superintendent’s Letter below which was sent out the same day it was discovered.
As a community of RHS Alumni, we act as an unofficial bulwark, as a last fortification against this type of disturbing outburst.
After all the police reports and letters to parents have been filed, the alumni now need to remind the current students that this sort of behavior wasn’t tolerated in our day, anymore than it is tolerated now.
Alumni need to come forward and declare, “This shit don’t happen here!”
We are better than this. Our long Tradition of Excellence demands that we speak up and act out. Show the better angels of our nature still know when to reach out and touch someone.
We have been thrust into this role through no fault of our own, except to have been lucky enough to graduate from RHS and be rewarded throughout our lives by this association.
Though one’s Success in this world is bigger than the trophies you collect, how much money you have, or the car you drive. Success obliges one everyday to connect with something larger than just you, your family, or your local community.
Please avail yourself of this opportunity.

The Pickled Silhouette
I stood staring into the sun watching court after court play pickleball and took this blinded not knowing it was shot sideways...I call that a happy mistake.
Shot on 6th Avenue just north of Houston looking east.

Read Across America
This week celebrates “Read Across America.” The Quakertown Fire Company was invited to participate with the grammar school for this annual event. This is a component of our community engagement program that I have long supported.
“Go, Dog Go” is a story that I know well. It was a favorite of my children at bedtime so long ago.

RPS Superintendent’s Letter
January 17, 2024
Dear Ridgewood Public Schools Community and RHS Students,
Today, racial graffiti was found on a wall in one of our high school bathrooms.
This type of behavior will not be tolerated in our schools. We are proud to be a
diverse and inclusive community with a high expectation that all individuals
are treated with respect and dignity. Hate-based symbols and behaviors have
no place here.
Upon finding the graffiti, the bathroom was closed and locked, and the
incident was immediately reported to the Ridgewood Police Department for
a full investigation. The police gathered the necessary information and
photos, and the graffiti has now been removed from the wall.
Should you or your student become aware of any similar inappropriate
conduct, I encourage you to reach out to your school principal. Together, we
can continue to foster an inclusive school community.
Regards,
Mark Schwarz

Huffman Barn At Habernickel Park Razed
Today, the barn at Habernickel Park was removed. The barn had become run down and had infestation, along with structural and security concerns. The barn also had no useful purpose other than for minor storage. It was decided at a Village Council meeting in December to raze the barn, upon the recommendation of multiple Department Directors. What comes next will we discussed at upcoming Village Council capital budget meetings. We are considering an open air pavilion, with restrooms, to accommodate picnic benches, a community gathering area and to provide cover during inclement weather - especially during a sporting event at the field. Stay tuned.

You’re Saying It Wrong
Ross & Kathy’s podcast: You're Saying It Wrong is a podcast that looks at what we get wrong—and what we sometimes get right—when it comes to this English language.
Quick -- right or wrong? "I feel bad about that." Or do you feel badly? "The fish made me nauseous." Or ... nauseated? While we're at it, can you feel abject joy? Is something momentous historical or historic? We could go on about these niggling grammar questions -- and we do, on this week's episode of You're Saying It Wrong!

Ancestry Hack
Sharing a little trick if you're researching the history of a house....In "Ancestry.com" (available here at the Ridgewood Library), on the main search page, write in the EXACT town or city you're researching. Then, in the "keyword" box, write in your street address (again, click on the "EXACT" button). In this example, we're searching with a keyword of "10 Downing Street" in London.
As you'll see on the second image, you'll get results for anyone in the Ancestry database who's linked to that address. In this case, of course, it's people linked to a Prime Minister's family. And if you're using your own street address, hopefully you'll see some Ancestry records showing names of families that once lived in your house. Hopefully.
