Finding Your Way
I learned to garden from my parents and Gene Ricci, Sixth Grade Teacher at Willard School.
Now I repurpose these skills in what I call an Urban Oasis, a 700 sq ft triangle adjacent to our driveway. It’s completely fenced and reminds me what the poet Robert Frost once said, “Good fences make good neighbors.”
People when they walk by can say hello or simply nod, secure in the knowledge their dog won’t poop on my flowers or dig up the seedlings. The fence protects us both!
Since Spring appears to have arrived, I have transplanted daffodils, tulips, and iris bulbs, created a new strawberry patch on a formerly unused sunny spot, and have trimmed at the mulberry trees so they don’t shade the blackberries & raspberries too much. I have not so modestly proclaimed this will be the best garden ever. Too soon to tell but it feels good to have found my way back to the garden.

A Little Reluctant With A Lot Of Color
I saw a kid and her mother running in the rain on the playground with their umbrellas held behind them acting like parachutes at the back of a racecar and as I approached...I asked the mom if I could take their picture as I showed her my photos and she said sure but the kid wouldn't run anymore and just stood there and so I shot this.
This is a pure reflection shot on the black top of the playground on 6th Avenue at Houston street with the grey sky and raindrops.

Polenta
I had a rare opportunity to join my father and brother for an old family favorite meal, Polenta. In this case we served it with a red sauce, sausages, and mushrooms. This is often our standard. We settled for pouring it on a pizza pan rather than the traditional method of directly on the table - as we did not wish to lose any over the edge.
Highly recommended, very simple to prepare, but there is no substitute for coarse cornmeal and constant stirring.

Rock Hound
Another photo from the pebble beach in Sister Bay, WI. I wanted to get a unique perspective of the water washed and rounded rocks on the beach, so I set the camera directly on the rocks (no tripod), set the aperture to f/22 to get maximum depth of field, and then leveled the camera as best I could. I was pretty impressed that, from the rocks in the foreground to the distant trees, the entire photo was in focus. This is what a good lens will give you.

Attention Somerville Friends!!! Adopt a Sapling is coming to your neighborhood. Please note this is a simple two part process. First you agree to adopt your baby sapling via the form (Somerville area only) this Spring. Adoptions are due back by May 15th and homeowner must commit to providing love, attention and water.
Second part is executing our robust adoption plan on October 19th when the whole town is welcome to join us in planting these pre adopted saplings.

Town Archives
Full transparency -- we don't have any vintage St. Patrick's Day photos or postcards in the archives. But the Library of Congress archives, available to all via "loc.gov," has images for just about EVERYTHING. These little guys, brothers from Brooklyn, are waiting for the NYC St. Patrick's Day parade in March of 1951. Photo from the New York World-Telegram newspaper.
