A Phone-Based Existence
My ancestors saw how Lincoln freed the slaves, Women were given the vote, and Child Labor was abolished. In my corner of the Shire “anything was possible” growing up. However, they never anticipated the impact of mobile communications. No doubt that Smartphones fill us with a new sense of possibility. They also occupy a central position in many people’s lives, and most obviously in teenagers.
While we can draw strength with how our society evolves, we can’t ignore any longer young people who are experiencing a tidal wave of anxiety, self-harm, and suicide.
Is it time to ban phones from our public schools?
A professor at New York University’s business school, Jonathan Haidt says a most emphatic YES! Mr. Haidt lays out an ambitious set of interventions in his new book, The Anxious Generation, which include: no smartphones before high school, no social media before age 16 and no phones in schools. He hopes that legislators, educators, big tech companies and parents can bring these to fruition by the end of 2025.
According to Mr. Haidt’s research, major depressive episodes have roughly doubled for teenagers since 2010.
Pediatrician and RHS Alumna, Dr Anne Robinson, offers this opinion:
For now, what we can do is require controls on what's out there for young minds to find. We can be vigilant about what our children are viewing, ask questions, offer advice, regardless of how unwelcome the intrusion might be. A tricky business at best.

Set My Flowers Free
As I stare into the wine shop wondering why it's not open...I notice some flowers through a metal fence which has recently been installed by the management not to prevent people from breaking in to the liquor store but to prevent me from drooling on the glass - set my flowers free!!!
Shot on 6th Ave just north of Carmine Street looking west.
Time 8am.

A Cup Of Tea On The Commode
"An intimate, funny and heartwarming memoir of how eldercare can be done."
At 55, I gave up my carefree bachelor life to become a first-time parent to a ninety-year-old, sharp-tongued, guilt-tripping, stubborn as all get out, and yet funny lady who could barely remember my name. My mother. It’s rare for a son to take on 24/7 caregiving, but I jumped in with gusto to fill Mom’s last years with love, laughter, and joy. Not always successful, but I came pretty damn close. “A Cup of Tea on the Commode” chronicles my multi-tasking adventures. My hope is to not only entertain as there are a lot of fun stories in it, but to inspire others, especially men, to find the joy in caregiving. I did, and I’m a better man for it.

You’re Saying It Wrong
Ross & Kathy’s podcast: You're Saying It Wrong is a podcast that looks at what we get wrong—and what we sometimes get right—when it comes to this English language.
Hot off the presses ... or, rather, radio waves! This week's newest espisode -- words that SOUND like they're related to other words, but might not be. We're talking words like shamefaced, checkmate and, everyone's fave vomitorium! Where'd they come from anyway, huh?!? (AND ... if you've got the time and/or wherewithal, ask your local public radio station to add You're Saying It Wrong to their lineup! The more stations, the merrier!)
