RHS Mid-Life Wisdom
It is an immense privilege to grow old because there are a million different versions of doing it. Attitude does count for a lot. Though, what helps most I’ve found is regular exercise. Yes, I know this is a big surprise coming from an ex-Jock, but it’s true.
I stretch every night to the memories of all my RHS coaches & Physical Education teachers, who by example, shouted command, or gentle suggestion, left an indelible impression upon me. I dedicate a stretching exercise to the most memorable among them because there are plenty of people who will tell you how-to think and why this is important. However, they usually lack an authentic connection to the people they are trying to instruct. This cannot be said of the Educators I encountered in the Village of Ridgewood. Whether it was the RHS Alumni who taught me how to swim at Graydon Pool or Tice Chase of GWMS who adroitly demonstrated the art of the one-hand push-up all his life, they held my attention long enough to impart lasting knowledge. For all these people I am grateful. Being able to exercise dutifully is a precious gift.

An outtake from yesterday makes me wonder if somewhere out there in the universe there isn't someone screaming at the vehicle ahead.
This is a close up of the brass base of a "velvet rope" during a rain storm shot on Broadway at 45th street looking east with billboards flashing their lights in the reflection.

So unfortunately E + R = O
And unfortunately or fortunately the capital R belongs to you.
You and I both know the greatest things that we do are the hardest things. The most important thing we learn is to find the strength and courage to push ourselves into and through the hard stuff.
When the waves are breaking beautifully when the pitches are coming at you underhand, the market is dishing you automated money this game is a cinch.
No rulebook needed. No strategic adjustment just play.
But unfortunately, according to some universal wishes, the challenges seem to slip in sneakily and test are ability to stay calm, be confident, and show the grit to.persevere.
These three incredible virtues serve us.
Gratitude.
Optimism.
Tenacity.
In the old days as a teacher I lived on one phrase and we talked about it every day in every class I taught.
Not knowing what I would be getting into.
I saw my mom model this virtue or slogan
Character is the ability to persist against constant opposition.
It was ability hang in there not throw the towel in not tap out. Not cry uncle.
Easy to say hard to do and the only way you can do it is by practicing it with the little things. All the trips to the gym, making your bed, eating what you know you should eat, showing up when you don’t have to, and hitting the sack when others look past the clock. These are not fun things they’re just the skill work that allows you when the big guys show up to be able to do the right thing instead of the easy thing.
E + R = O.
The choice is yours says Victor Frankel. It is the last of the human freedoms.
As great weightlifting coach Jersey Gregoric says “ hard choices easy life, easy choices hard life.”

National Library Week
So please indulge our posting one more photo celebrating National Library week... Photo is from April of 1973, showing a patron checking out a painting from the Ridgewood Library's circulating art collection. Yes, you could actually check out a painting, just like a book! Staffer is Helen Bohne, the Loan Desk Supervisor.
