AI Maroons Online
While a newsletter takes no where near the effort to produce than that of a traditional newspaper, we feel a kinship to them. Especially now that more than 350 newspapers failed in the first few years of the pandemic. That was the same pace at which newspapers were failing before the pandemic: a rate of two closures or so per week.
It’s the loss of local coverage which is the most distressing aspect of these newspaper closures. We have all known these last thirty years, and especially after the World Wide Web was introduced in 1995 and Smartphones with high-speed cellular coverage in 2009, that newspapers were experiencing their last gasp.
Newspapers collectively used to be known as “The Fourth Estate.” Their local coverage of Courthouses and Municipal Governments used to be a bulwark against corruption and malfeasance by local politicians & citizens.
Local reporters would chase provocative stories and often times would publish what amounted to a good public shaming of officials and the programs they set forth.
The future for local news is anyone’s guess. Maybe we allow AI to write our news.
This Mission and Vision statement was composed using an Artificial Intelligence tool:
The mission of The Ridgewood Maroon is to bring the Ridgewood High School community together through a unique alumni newsletter. Our vision is to foster a strong sense of connection, inspiration, and engagement among alumni by showcasing their achievements, providing collaborative opportunities, and facilitating networking.
I’ll call this bit of AI my own. Plagiarism be damned!

Hiding In A Post Christmas Ornament
On the wall of my local was a crusty old ornament (and I'm not talking about myself) but a frosted glass orb that somehow survived the post christmas breakdown and as I walked closer to it...I took this - what is missing is the bartender over my shoulder telling me the last 4 drinks aren't on the house but I remained calm during the photo - currently writing this from an undisclosed location.
Shot at Molly's on 3rd and 22nd.

RHS Class of 1974 save the date! We are organizing our 50th Reunion (OMG!) for the weekend of September 20 to 22, 2024. Here is what the Reunion Committee has planned so far:
• Friday, Sept. 20th 6:00 -10:00 p.m….Informal meet-up at MacMurphy’s Irish Pub for those traveling from afar and anybody else who just wants to hang out
• Saturday, Sept. 21st 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m….Tour of Ridgewood High School and lunch in the cafeteria.
• Saturday, Sept. 21st 6:30 – 10:00 p.m….Dinner/dance at the Woman's Club of Ridgewood.
• Sunday, Sept. 22nd 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m….Casual send-off breakfast at the Schoolhouse Museum (opposite the cemetery).
If you might conceivably want to attend, please email us at RHS1974Reunion50@gmail.com so we can send you an invitation through RSVPify. No need to commit at this time.
Can you volunteer? We’d love to take advantage of skills that our classmates may have. For example, we still need a professional photographer, a graphic artist, clean-up crew, and people finders. Email us what/how you’d like to contribute at RHS1974Reunion50@gmail.com. This is a grassroots endeavor; our Reunion Committee is composed of 15 RHS ’74 grads. We have not hired AlumniClass or any other third-party to organize our reunion.
