The Summer Job
Growing up “jobs” included all forms of seasonal manual labor like cutting grass, raking leaves & shoveling snow. There were paper routes, dishwasher jobs, + the ever present need for cleaning out garages, attics, & basements for the valuable “deposit” bottles.
Recent news reports the current state of jobs:
Teenagers across the country are entering one of the toughest summer job markets in recent years, as traditional jobs at restaurants, amusement parks, pools and stores either pause new hiring or choose adults for those roles.
Businesses today are watching their peers aggressively change hiring plans or flatten corporate structures in response to advances in AI, and they wonder could we do more?
As AI expands, the real opportunity is to find a way to use human effort to create more value. I’d like to suggest a new 501(C)(3) organization, or re-purposing one of the many existing ones, to explore the feasibility costs of creating & supervising an RHS Civilian Conservation Corps. It would be a one month paid internship program beginning immediately after 4th of July Weekend, and a second one starting four weeks later. Classroom instruction would be combined with opportunities for hands-on experience.
The course of instruction might begin with the work of the RHS Class of 1974 and their much admired Ho-Ho-Kus Brook Riparian Restoration. (Link Below.)
These students would be supervised by a paid adult and each cohort would create their own status report with photos & videos describing the current state of the village landscape, its waterways, trees & fields. A complete map of ongoing projects might be the result by the end of each summer.
Students who complete the internship would be feted at a party with their families and subsequently their curriculum vitae would include this paid internship. The Village would receive the results of a second pair of eyes looking at their present endeavors, and insights into what might best happen next. A true Win-Win for all involved.

Standing On The Edge Of Yesteryear
A man steps off the curb and stares into the light and thinks for a moment about all the fun times he had as a kid decorating his bicycle on the 4th of July and playing with fireworks with his friends and just then...a car slams on its horn and a bike messages almost runs him over and the man exhales and regroups himself but for that one moment...he was happily standing on the edge of yesteryear.
Shot on Broadway just south of Pine street looking north with the Woolworth building in the distance.

Ho-Ho-Kus Brook Riparian Restoration
The Class of 1974 marked their 50th reunion during Homecoming Weekend 2024—and chose to celebrate with a lasting legacy. Led by reunion co-chairs Pam Perron and Gail Leach Ansheles, the class came together to make a meaningful gift to the Ridgewood High School Alumni Association (RHSAA), raising more than $2,200 in support.
Howard Liverance
For 60 years, I've lived and breathed stories of Ridgewood and baseball, and for the last 2 years, I have crafted a two-volume memoir that captures the heart of a community and the journey of a lifetime. This wasn't just a writing project; it was a deep dive into experiences that helped shape me—a labor of love that demanded every ounce of my energy and resources.
