Whatever Happened To…
When I was growing up there were a couple of phrases that everyone in the neighborhood and the school playgrounds understood.
Need a little help…
This was uttered when a ball escaped your designated play area and ventured into someone else’s. It was sometimes shortened to simply, “Little Help” if they ball interrupted a game and nobody knew where it had come from. This was a perfectly acceptable request which was rarely ignored because you never knew when you might need a little help yourself.
Can you keep it down over there?
This was heard when you were making too much noise for too long near somebody’s house. It usually was said if the occupants of the home were particularly annoyed by your exuberance. The usually response was to move your fun some place else and maybe even apologize. I don’t remember testing the limits on this with a wise guy response and then merrily continuing with my breach of the peace. Some kids did. The consequences were always the same: a call to your parents and a swift end to all fun & games. If your parents couldn’t be found on the phone or by a knock on their door, then the police were called. Game over.
Now I read recently about the Ridgewood Village Council allocating $24,000 for the purchase and installation of panels to muffle the noise emanating from the Pickle Ball courts on Glen Avenue. You might be wondering if this is a “Real Thing” as one commenter so brilliantly added. Yes, it is by all accounts real.
The questions which immediately come to my mind, Why have the Pickle Ball players ignored the age old plea for quiet? What is it about their entitled position in the community that allows them to disregard neighborhood etiquette? Last but not least, What would prompt the Village Council to make such an extravagant purchase on sound proofing panels that are of dubious value, and according to the manufacturer might not solve the problem?

April 17, 2022 - NYC Subway.
Subway Bonnets
The annual NYC Easter parade and Bonnet Festival never disappoints - for me...its the people getting to and from the event that I find most entertaining.
Shot into the glass side window as I exited the north bound 6 train on 86th street as the subway pulled out - subway turnstiles in reflection.
Time 1pm.
